Lessons from a dugout mom. I mean dad.
Posted on March 19th, 2012

Let me explain. Last year when I was helping out with Jackson's little league baseball team, I sort of morphed into helping in the dugout, keeping the batting order and getting the boys ready for their turn, among other very important duties. :)

I did not realize the position is usually called the "dugout mom" until it was put on a very nicely engraved trophy once the season was over. It was hilarious when I saw the engraving and we all had a good laugh about it.

Seriously though, I do wear the title with honor. I'm surrounded by godly coaches and precious kids to help learn about baseball, teamwork and life. I figured I'd jot some of the lessons I'm learning with it onto a computer and maybe someone would read it.

We played in a local tournament this weekend. It was an eye opener for sure. I'm so proud of our boys for playing their little butts off, but you'd think that the way some coaches, players, and especially crazy parents act at 7 & 8 year old baseball games, that there were a million dollars at stake or something. Nope. Just a good ole' "atta boy" once the tournament is over and maybe a trophy. Put those two together and you can't even buy a coke.

So, lesson one is fairly simple. It's just baseball people. YOUTH BASEBALL!! Settle down and let the boys play and grow and learn.

More lessons to come. :)

Great words of wisdom, Brad. As a manager myself, it's easy to get sucked into the hype of winning. But as you said, "It's just baseball people". I prayed for guidance after a rough day Saturday.... I found myself relaxed and enjoying the games so much more on Sunday! I had a blast and more importantly, so did the boys!
